Welcome to Makerere University School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Resources (MakSVAR). Guided by Makerere University vision, and inspired by our core responsibilities of teaching/ learning, research and community service. 

MakSVAR aims to be a leader for academic excellence and innovation championing veterinary medicine and harnessing the animal resources for healthier and wealthier community livelihoods.

At MakSVAR we endeavor to provide hands-on training and skilling of our students and stimulate them to be critical thinkers. Our practice and community attachment programs aim at impressing upon our graduates’ attitude towards learning and research responsive to the national and global needs. MakSVAR provides an environment for innovation and research for community development.

Our School prides itself in a vibrant, multidisciplinary, committed and well-trained human resource over the wide spectrum of the animal resources disciplines i.e. veterinary medicine, Wildlife, Aquaculture and livestock production.

This human resource is organized in three departments namely Department of Veterinary Medicine Clinical and Comparative Medicine, Department of Livestock Industrial Resources and Department of wildlife and Aquatic Animals Resources.

MakSVAR hosts eight academic programs (4 masters and 4 undergraduate). In addition the school’s research agenda is supported by three centers which include; Veterinary clinical center for veterinary training and clinical services, the RK-Where Ruth Keesling Wildlife Health –focused on mountain Gorrilla health in Uganda and hosts Gorrilla doctors Predict Program and RTC-Research center for Tropical Diseases and Vector Control –leading in acaricide research and community interventions in Uganda. For hands-on training and outreach the school has strategic field sites for training as well as community partnerships in the agricultural sector.

As a school we greatly cherish our alumni and collaborators who are important in upholding the values of MakSVAR. We have a commendable network of partnerships within and outside Africa and are working towards further consolidating existing and expanding to new partnerships.
