SVAR-IACUC/IRB

MAK-SVAR strives to ensure that all research involving animal is ethical. Therefore the school established the institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC/IRB) focused on only the animal subject component hence reviewing only animal related researches.

First formed on 7th June, 2017 the office the office has created awareness in research ethics, animal welfare and has reviewed several research protocols.  The ethics office is mandated to;

  • Review animal research protocols
  • Train staff on animal ethics research
  • Create awareness among students and staff on animal ethics

SVAR-IACUC/IRB - desk officer is Ms. Natukunda Christine

SVAR - Research Office

The school established a research support services office to provide staff with centralized services during grant proposal development, submission and research management. There are pre-award and post-award services offered;

 The pre-award services;

  1. Share research grant calls with staff
  2. Ensure staff meet the research grant deadline
  3. Provide support letters and financial statements for each grant

Post award services;

  1. Monitor grant implementation
  2. Timely report submissions
  3. Ensure staff follow university research management guidelines

The RTC Laboratory was established in 2015 with a seed grant from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as a Research Center for Ticks and Tick-borne diseases Control. The lab was established as a core component of the evidence-based acaricide tick control (EBATIC) initiative; to test ticks against acaricide resistance and use the findings to institute intervention.

In the last 2 years, RTC has become a leading center for acaricide resistance research and community intervention in Uganda through a model called evidence based acaricide tick control (EBATIC). Taking the lab to the community has enabled RTC scientists to interact, listen and learn about other pressing research questions and challenges which our community wants us to solve.

RTC themes

In 2017, RTC was transformed into a Research Center for Tropical Diseases and Vector Control (RTC), so as to open new frontiers of scientific research based on the needs identified. To achieve the new goals and mission, RTC has seven strategic research themes that include;

  1. Ticks and Tick-borne diseases Control
  2. Genomics & Vaccine Research
  3. Antimicrobial and Anthelmintic resistance monitoring and action
  4. Neglected animal diseases and zoonoses control
  5. Pharmaceutical Research and Clinical Trials
  6. Pollinator Protection and Insect Research
  7. RTC Global (Alliance against drug resistance and neglected animal diseases and zoonoses).

At RTC-PRI, we recognize that insects and pollinators are key in rural livelihoods since they support agriculture and provide food for humans and animals. As such, we aim at developing evidence based strategies for improved insect pollinator health, productivity and utilization.

RTC-PRI research services are focused on insect pollinator health and diagnostics, microbiome, metagenomics, digital technologies for insect pollinator protection/database, advocacy for sustainable agro-veterinary & public health vector control technologies that protect pollinators and natural enemies in the ecosystems. We also seek to design, develop, test and disseminate eco-friendly technologies and approaches for sustainable insect utilization and animal pest control for rural incomes and health.
